I married my husband in March of 2001, two months before I graduated from college with a B.A. in Creative Writing and Psychology. My maiden name was Alice R. Nelson. I have two cats (pictured above), named Herc and Risu. Jeff vanished out through a faulty screen in May of 2007, and we've only seen him in passing since. Hopefully, he's found a new home, with more secure windows. Anime used to be HUGE to me, but now, I lean more toward manga. It's cheaper, though not by a lot. And while I'm still an anime fan, I enjoy roleplaying more, since it tends to encourage more active participation. I enjoy a slew of activities other than that, but I spend most of my time at work or being a sleepy homebody. I'd like to be a writer, though I spend more time making excuses of why I don't write than actually putting my butt in the chair and typing, so for now, I'm just a wannabe. Either the stars will align just the right way, or I'll finally get my ass in gear. Currently, I work for Diamond Brand, which is an outdoor activty-type store in the mountains of Western North Carolina. I work in their back offices, mostly, typing up information for their merchandise database, with other random duties thrown in for good measure. I grew up on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, but moved to Asheville, NC after some bastard started a fire in the basement of my apartment building. Despite the circumstances of the move, I'm rather glad I ended up in Asheville, because I enjoy this beautiful island of liberalism in the middle of the Bible Belt. People are friendlier and more open here than anywhere I've lived before, and there's a refreshing lack of judgmentalism among most of the people I meet. My college roommate, meanwhile, got me addicted to attending Dragon*Con annually, having paid for my ticket in 2005. I'm rather proud of the fact that I'm not always predictable and have a cynical streak, and I'm unapologetic about my propensity for ranting about nothing important. Anyone reading my journal needs to know that I rant to get things off my chest, get them out of my head, and be done with them. It doesn't always work, but it makes me feel better. I strive to be an honest, trustworthy, interesting, friendly and levelheaded person, mostly. It's a work in progress. I tend not to delve too deeply into my private life unless asked a direct question, but I'm working on being more open and less reserved. I'm prone to depression and self-doubt, but I don't wallow in it or beg pity, nor do I let these tendencies define who I am. I don't do memes in my LJ anymore, and am in the process of deleting a lot of my old entries with just memes. It's not that I think they're dumb; I don't. For me, though, they're another way of keeping people at arm's length, interacting with them without letting them know who I am. I'm trying to break that habit, so memes must go. I also don't watch any television, at least at home, live. I dislike commercials and find a vast majority of what's on to be crap, not worth paying the fifty bucks a month. I rent some highly-recommended shows on DVD, but I don't subscribe to any cable or satellite service, and I prefer to rent movies and anime over television shows. Though my journal is friends-only, I'm not terribly picky about who I add. If you leave a comment on my one non-friends-locked entry, or if you add me first, I'll likely add you on. I like making new friends, especially people who I might meet in person, so if you're a local or a D*C regular, speak up! HOWEVER, you might want to save us both the time and trouble if you fit into any of these categories: - You're an internet persona. I've had my fill of this kind of dishonesty. I
want people on my flist to bring their true selves. I don't want to be friends with
characters or inventions; real people are far more interesting. If you want to hide
behind an invented personality online, that's your prerogative, but please don't
clog up my flist with it.
- You don't care about your spelling/grammar/punctuation/capitalization/paragraph
breaks/formatting. I'm not the type to go commenting on every single entry to
point out a typo or snark at people for misspelling a commonly-misspelled word,
but if your posts consistently give me a headache to read, I won't bother.
- You're a dramamonger. I'm well aware that conflict is a rather big part of
almost any long-term friendship, but there are ways to deal with it, and ways not
to. I can understand some information-gathering and gaining of perspective
through chat, but once you've talked about what a horrible person you think I am
publicly (or through friends-only channels), you've lost any interest I might've
had in hearing your side. I left such tactics behind when I graduated high school.
I want to deal with conflict one-on-one, not by dragging other people into it. If
you'd rather not deal with me at all when my temper's flared up (and I'm aware that
I do have a temper), say the word, and I'll respect your wishes, and wait until
you're ready to discuss it.Otherwise, you'll stay classified as a friend unless you've made it blindingly obvious you don't want to be mine. | |
